Your Political Investment!
My vision for the Colombo District and its citizens is rooted in three core values: Liberty, Equity, and Justice. These principles are not merely ideals; they form the foundation of a society where every individual—regardless of socioeconomic background, gender, birthplace, profession, or beliefs—can succeed and prosper without facing political or policy-based discrimination. Many feel their political aspirations have been overlooked or exploited over the past 75 years. Now is the time to break this pattern. It’s time to choose a representative who genuinely embodies your vision and goals for Colombo—a representative who values your vote and commits to real change. My political vision, based on the enduring values of Liberty, Equity, and Justice, is an investment in Colombo’s future, promising positive transformation.
Liberty is the foundation of human dignity. Every individual, regardless of race, religion, gender, or social status, must have the right to fully harness their potential and pursue their dreams. Liberty encompasses economic, personal, political, and social freedoms.
The purpose of Liberty is to create a society that reduces external interference and barriers while providing opportunities for every individual to improve their circumstances. My ambition is to transform Liberty into a catalyst for individual, district-wide, and national growth. In this journey toward prosperity, we must ensure that no one is left behind. By establishing a political framework that enables personal empowerment, we can foster a district where innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity thrive.
While we all share Colombo as our home, circumstances differ significantly due to biological, social, cultural, economic, legal, and historical factors. These disparities often create challenges, making it harder for some individuals and groups to achieve their aspirations. Equity means providing everyone with a fair starting point.
Certain groups—such as women, economically disadvantaged individuals, and people with disabilities—still face obstacles in the race for opportunity. Achieving equality requires targeted efforts to remove these barriers. We must go beyond equal opportunities and ensure that those who need additional support receive it. By understanding and meeting the unique needs of every citizen, we can guide Colombo toward a future where all can succeed and contribute to shared progress.
ustice must be at the heart of every action we take—whether in lawmaking, policy development, or personal decisions. Justice is not only about equitable outcomes but also about ensuring fairness in the processes that lead to these outcomes. I am committed to shaping laws and policies grounded in justice that protect the rights of every citizen in Colombo.
Drawing from my five years of research on Colombo’s communities and my experience as a member of the Colombo Municipal Council, I have identified four critical areas essential for the security and prosperity of all. Addressing both longstanding and emerging challenges, my priorities include:
Children and young people are our most valuable asset and our hope for a brighter future. They are not only tomorrow’s leaders but also an investment in our present. By ensuring their safety, health, and confidence, we are laying the foundation for a prosperous future for all.
As a policymaker, I am dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by Generation Z and Generation Alpha in today’s world. I will work tirelessly to introduce laws and measures that protect, support, and empower them.
Rising mental health issues among youth—exacerbated by isolation, pressure, and technology - demand urgent national attention.
Introduce legislation mandating mental health services in educational institutions, from schools to universities, ensuring access to counselors and regular screenings. Propose laws requiring workplaces to offer paid leave for mental health issues, treating them as equal to physical health. Advocate for national campaigns to destigmatize mental health challenges and encourage young people to seek help without fear of judgment.
Drug addiction, particularly in urban areas like Colombo, is on the rise due to isolation, family disconnect, and lack of support systems. Existing rehabilitation services also face significant challenges.
Strengthen anti-drug laws, with a focus on increasing regulation around schools and youth centers to prevent drug access. Expand access to voluntary rehabilitation and community support services for youth. Promote preventive measures through awareness programs and provide alternative activities such as sports and arts. Destigmatize seeking professional help for overcoming addiction by highlighting success stories of recovery.
The digital world presents new risks, including cyber abuse and the unintentional involvement of youth in illegal online activities.
Enforce stricter cyber security laws to protect children from online exploitation and harassment. Introduce mandatory digital literacy programs in schools to teach online safety, cyber-bullying awareness, and the legal implications of digital actions. Collaborate with technology companies to create safer online environments and implement robust monitoring of harmful content.
Growing misunderstandings between Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and older generations are leading to societal and familial discord.
Implement national programs to promote intergenerational dialogue, fostering mutual understanding and respect. Advocate for workplace mentorship programs that encourage collaboration between senior and younger employees, creating a culture of learning and shared experiences. Support community initiatives that bring families and generations together through shared activities and communication. Address mental abuse in the workplace due to generational differences by extending labor laws to cover such issues comprehensively.
Young women and girls face a range of challenges, including harassment, intimidation, and limited opportunities. Ensuring their protection and providing the necessary support for their success is crucial. Additionally, certain women face greater injustices based on their social, economic, ethnic, or religious backgrounds. For example, women in rural areas of Colombo have fewer opportunities compared to those in urban areas. Muslim women also face legal limitations that restrict their rights compared to other women in the country. Furthermore, women living near coastal areas, along railway lines, and in estate communities encounter significant obstacles, from meeting basic needs to pursuing their goals. Therefore, when addressing the challenges faced by women, it is essential that resources are allocated and solutions developed with careful consideration of each woman’s unique social, economic, ethnic, and religious status.
As someone who has lived with diabetes in Colombo for over ten years, I understand firsthand the immense challenges it presents. The impact of diabetes and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) extends beyond physical well-being, affecting personal, professional, and interpersonal relationships. Unfortunately, NCDs, including diabetes, have become alarmingly common among young people, posing a serious threat to our country’s development. Diabetes, in particular, often leads to various other health complications including heart disease, resulting in loss of life and reduced productivity.
In today’s fast-paced, competitive world, more young people are facing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. However, our existing laws and societal structures have not adequately recognized these growing risks, failing to provide the necessary support. One of the biggest barriers to managing these conditions is the lack of accessible, affordable, and healthy food options. Many restaurants and low-cost food outlets have not yet grasped the extent of this challenge, forcing middle-income individuals to consume unhealthy foods due to the limited availability of healthier alternatives.
Physical fitness, along with healthy nutrition, plays a critical role in managing non-communicable diseases. However, fitness literacy, especially among the middle class, remains low. Activities like going to the gym or practicing yoga are often perceived as expensive luxuries, creating a social perception that fitness is inaccessible to ordinary people.
As part of my health policy, I strive to reduce barriers to physical fitness by ensuring that fitness programs are inclusive and accessible for all communities. I promote physical fitness in the following ways:
Dissatisfaction with body image and appearance is prevalent among teenagers and young adults. Commercial advertising, particularly on social media, exacerbates this issue, leading many young people to resort to dangerous and unhealthy methods to lose weight or enhance their appearance. Many are unaware of the long-term damage these practices can cause. Insecurities about body image often drive young people to use harmful substances, crash diets, and other risky methods that threaten their health.
As the commercial and cultural hub of Sri Lanka, Colombo must serve all its residents, not just a privileged few. It should be an inclusive, active urban center that provides opportunities for all, regardless of socio-economic status or where they live. However, there are clear inequalities in access to urban facilities, preventing many communities from benefiting from the city’s growth. This lack of equitable access weakens residents’ sense of ownership and entitlement to their city.
Urban planning in Colombo must be designed so that all citizens, whether they live in the city center or its outskirts, have equal access to resources and opportunities. This includes the fair distribution of public services, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. As a policymaker, I focus on creating a city where every resident feels secure and has equal access to everything the city offers. This approach encompasses sectors such as education, healthcare, clean public spaces, and employment.
To ensure inclusivity, Colombo must become a place where everyone, regardless of their background, can participate in its prosperity. I will work to reduce inequalities in housing, transportation, and access to essential services, ensuring that no one is left behind. This will include creating community advisory boards to ensure that local voices are heard in the planning process and that solutions are tailored to the needs of diverse neighborhoods.

Activities like going to the gym or practicing yoga are often perceived as expensive luxuries, creating a social perception that fitness is inaccessible to ordinary people.
Addressing these issues requires a fundamental rethink of urban planning with a focus on sustainability. I will:
To address this, I will promote urban planning policies that actively include marginalized communities, ensuring a fair redistribution of resources and economic opportunities throughout the city. By attracting investors, expanding development projects, and establishing service hubs in diverse areas, I will foster a sense of dignity and ownership among all residents. Additionally, I will implement educational programs that teach residents about their rights and how to engage in local governance, empowering them to advocate for their needs and aspirations. By prioritizing sustainable urban planning and inclusivity, we can create a Colombo that is not only vibrant and culturally rich but also a city where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
Despite Sri Lanka’s free education system, deep inequalities persist at all levels of education. Students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds often lack access to digital tools, modern curricula, and quality language education, which prevents them from competing equally with their peers.
I support creating an inclusive higher education market that ensures affordable, high-quality tertiary education for all.
Through these initiatives, we can empower every child, regardless of their background, to succeed in a globalized world. By prioritizing early childhood education alongside equitable access to resources, we can foster a more equal and inclusive Colombo, ultimately contributing to a brighter future for all our citizens.
With these initiatives, I am committed to creating a secure, inclusive, and prosperous future for Colombo—one where every citizen can thrive. Together, we can build a district that offers meaningful opportunities, respects diversity, and supports every individual’s right to a healthy, fulfilling life.
